Our Recipient: St. John's Shelter Program for Women & Children

The mission of St. John's is to support homeless women with children to advance from a point of crisis to a position of self-sufficiency. They offer a 90-day program, rooted in one-on-one case management including: the collaborative development of a Progress Plan with weekly and monthly goals; required attendance at classes/workshops each week; needs-based counseling; and daily community service requirements (otherwise known as chores.) Services and classes at St. John's include: domestic violence counseling, mental health counseling, drug and alcohol treatment programs, health services from a nurse, job training and placement services, parenting classes, fitness and nutrition classes, beauty services, art therapy, budgeting and financial management class, and other self-development classes.

What is a Reading & Learning Center?

Should we win; the project will include the renovation of a portable classroom that was recently donated to St. John's Shelter Program for Women & Children. The Reading & Learning Center will include the donation of books, furniture i.e. computer desks and chairs, 10-15 computers, reading and literacy materials and signage. This Reading & Learning Center will give the children served by St. John's Shelter Program a greater chance to further their education while minimizing outside distractions.

Our History of Success with This Program:

The Sacramento area Rotary and Kiwanis clubs have won this contest the past three seasons. Over $25,000 has been raised between Rotary's Polio Plus and the Kiwanis Family House. Thousands of deserving kids have had the opportunity to experience a Monarchs game through the donated tickets. Throughout the years the beneficiaries of this program have earned:

•  A Reading and Learning Center for Oak Ridge Elementary School (2007)

•  An outdoor basketball court for the YMCA (2006), and

•  An indoor basketball court for the Sacramento Children's Receiving Home (2005)
